Momma's Popcorn Balls

Since opening in the summer of 2006, the family-owned Mom and Popcorn Company on the square has churned out more than 45 different flavors of popcorn daily. From old standbys such as caramel and cheese to unique offerings including creamy dill and watermelon, the shop serves up tasty treats including popcorn balls and classic candies.

If you’d like to try your hand at making homemade popcorn balls, experiment with this recipe from owners Kim and Tim Loyd.

Momma's Popcorn Balls

  • Butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup corn syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 5 quarts popped popcorn

Butter sides of saucepan. Combine sugar, salt, syrup and vinegar in pan. Cook to 250 degrees (hard ball stage). Remove from heat. Wait 1 minute, add vanilla. Cool briefly. Pour contents over the popped popcorn. Shape into balls. Keep hands well buttered during the process of forming the balls. The mixture will be very hot!

Makes 15-20 popcorn balls.
