Store Brings New Beginning For McKinney Couple

It all started 3 years ago when Tim and Kim Loyd bought a house in the McKinney Historic District to restore and sell. They wanted the proceeds of the house to open a grilled-cheese sandwich shop.

Then life happened.

After working in the corporate world for more than 20 years, their lives were forever changed. In September 2005, Kim experienced a near-fatal car accident that lead this driven couple down another path. They decided they wanted to work close to home to savor the family life. The answer was clear: Downtown McKinney.

“After our close friends, Craig and Theresa Johnson, suggested opening a popcorn store, the idea of a sandwich store disappeared,” Kim said. “Shortly after our discussion, dreams of making popcorn were bouncing in our heads.”

Now that dream is a reality. The Mom and Popcorn Co. is open and ready for business. Guests can enjoy more than 32 flavors of fresh popcorn ranging from jalapeno to green apple made right in the store. In addition to the popcorn, guests can step back in time to experience homemade fudge, salt water taffy and old-fashioned soft drinks including on of the local favorites, RC. The shop also carries gift boxes and tins for any special occasion.

Looking back over the years, Tim and Kim feel confident about their decision to open up the Mom and Popcorn Co. in Downtown McKinney.

“Between the feel of the old world charm of Historic Downtown McKinney and the exceptional friendly people, we feel as if we are living the American dream,” Kim said. “Life is good.”

The Mom and Popcorn Co. is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. It is located at 215 E. Louisiana St. in historic Downtown McKinney.
